Mission 52: Week 18

Every year Maggies Pub in santa fe springs has an amazing event. It usually sells out quite early and tickets are hard to come by. I wasn’t doing anything on st patricks day so i called up my friend robert who plays in a cover band at the event and he was able to get me an extra ticket. The event was super dark so i had to use two strobes hand held to get some kind of light to shoot with. As usual the band was great and they had everyone dancing the night away

Sometimes i will shoot things and it will be forever til i actually get around to editing the shots. This is one of those shots. Whats so great about my flickr friends is we all get together for each others birthdays and go out to dinner. When i joined flickr 2 years ago i never thought i would actually meet people i would consider my friends. Since joining flickr i been on countless flickr meets all over southern california and even to vegas. This shoot was from a birthday dinner for belinda recasa. Since it was at a sushi place i wasn’t sure what i could order until i saw someone else with this huge pile of teriyaki chicken and then i was sold

Mission 52: Week 16

Every once in awhile my friend will take his car to the irwindale speedway to test his time against an 8th mile. For some reason luck seems to never be on my side when we go here. Quite a few times i have attempted to shoot his car off the line but usually something will go wrong preventing me from actually shooting the car with some available daylight. Hopefully one day we will actually be able to run with some daylight and i won’t have to rely on my strobes.

Ever since I could remember we always had animals around the house. My mother is a bleeding heart for pets and can’t stand to see them suffer. Lucky for her she married a man who also shares the same passion for animals as she does. I can’t even count the amount of animals at the house now. They all have there own personalities even though they get quiet annoying sometimes. My mother works for a major industrial equipment company which has a huge lot. She has come across quite a few cats on the premises in need of help. Being the great person she is, she will take the cats in and give them a good home. About a month ago she came across two newborn kittens who would of surely died if she didn’t step up and take them in. Both kittens were so young that they had to be fed via a bottle and stimulated to urinate. She had lined up someone to take in the kittens once they were old enough to eat on there own but the person backed out so it looks like we got two new kittens. They are crazy little guys so you need to watch your feet when they are around.

When I joined flickr 2 years ago I never thought i would actually meet people i would consider real friends. The Los Angeles Flickr group are an amazing group of people that just so happen to share the same interest of photography as I do. Since joining flickr i been able to go some amazing places and shoot things i never thought i would have the chance to. Being such great people they go above and beyond to make people feel welcomed and appreciated. One of the great things they do is on people’s birthdays we all get together and go out to eat. For my birthday we all went to famous dave’s in long beach. I had only seen pictures of this place but i could not be more excited to go. The food was amazing and filling. It was everything i expected it to be. After dinner we took a stroll around Rainbow Harbor to capture some night shots. I really don’t like taking long exposures after the blue hour but something about the harbor sky just begged to be shotl

Mission 52: Week 13

Annually the los angeles flickr group sets up a meet for the golden dragon parade in chinatown. This year it happened to fall upon my birthday. I didn’t really have anything going on so i thought i would head on out to go walk around and shoot with my friends. The problem with downtown is the parking situation. While there is street parking it seems almost impossible to find a spot so your forced to pay inflated prices to park in a lot. I chose to park in my favorite lot that is free on the weekends but is no where near the meet up place. After parking i set on the half hour walk though the hilly downtown streets. I really didn’t care to shoot the parade to much i just kinda wanted to walk though downtown on a beautifully blue sky cloudy day. My feet were about dead when it was all said and done but still a great day of shooting in downtown.

Mission 52: Week 12

After being laid off from my job on friday i was pretty down in the dumps. With my life it seems like what can go wrong will. I woke up this morning and thought i would try to cheer myself up by playing some morning pick up hockey. It got far to hot and i ended up not having a very good skate. Quite disappointed i headed home stopping off getting some lunch. I really needed some kind of pick me up so i decided i would catch the sunset in huntington. it seemed to take forever to travel the 20 miles to get to the beach. traffic on the 605 was horrible it seemed i was racing the sun hopefully it would not be in vain. The tide was disappointingly high i should do some research on when is the best time of year for these type of shots. Hopefully things start turning around for me. I feel like life is a house of cards and the job is the bottom card. you pull the one card and the whole house comes crumbling down.

I’ve heard many stories of pismo beach california but i never had the chance to actually go visit myself. I was lucky enough to tag along with the los angeles flickr group as they treked the 3 hour drive out to this destination. Pismo was everything i though it would be. It was a great time with some great people. The dunes were just amazing i have never seen anything like it. I hope to go back one day with a model to take some portraits in this amazing location.

Mission 52: Week 10

Being a california native im extremely lucky to have interesting places all about me to shoot. While living here all my life there are still many places i have yet to visit. One of the places was joshua tree about 2.5 hours away from los angeles. The los angeles flickr group set out on a meet to explore this desert national park in the fringed temperatures and snow covered peaks. Since it was my first time out i really didn’t know what to expect. Im not so much of a nature shooter so i had alot of trouble trying to find a way to create interesting shots and not make things look boring or bland. The day ended up being alot of fun even in the face of freezing temperatures and long car rides The only thing that would make this trip even better was the chance to shoot some star trails. I would like to come back in the summer maybe to camp out and try my hand at some star trails.

Mission 52: Week 9

I been very lazy with my shooting lately. After my 365 project ended i just went into a meh mood. After taking a nap i felt restless and with nothing to do i looked up the sunset and decided to head out to downtown la. I wanted to take a shot at bunker hill to make up for a horrible one i took earlier last year with my d70. I ended up getting to la an hour before the sunset so i spent some time walking around. I found some new locations i never been to before and had plenty of time to set up. While i had a better body to redo these shots i am in bad need of a super wide angle i despise the nikon 18-55 but sadly it’s all i have for anything wide. I also wanted to try my hand at light painting. for christmas i received a led flashlight and i painted some of the foreground while doing long exposures. For my first time trying it out i thought they came out pretty decent.
